discover your "dalarna roots"

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people from Dalarna, Sweden, emigrated to America in search of a new life. Economic hardship, limited farmland, and the hope for better opportunities motivated thousands to leave their homes and villages.

Our trips are customizable based on your family’s origins, interests etc — whether your ancestors came from a specific village, town, or area in Dalarna. We can tailor the itinerary so that every visit, walk, and activity is personally meaningful, combining genealogy with active, engaging experiences that make your journey unforgettable.

It is estimated that over 200,000 people from Dalarna and surrounding regions moved to the United States during this period, seeking work, land, and a brighter future for their families.

TOUR PROGRAM

Day 1 – Arrival in Dalarna & a Personal Welcome to Your Heritage

Welcome to Dalarna — the heart of Swedish tradition. Upon arrival at Borlänge Airport (BLE), you’ll pick up your rental car and begin a scenic drive through forests and lake landscapes to Tällberg, one of Sweden’s most picturesque villages perched high above Lake Siljan. Make a stop here and explore the charming village of Tällberg.
Continue to drive to Mora and check into your charming boutique hotel, where the flower gardens, and panoramic views immediately set the tone for your Swedish adventure.
In the afternoon, enjoy a gentle walk along Siljan’s shoreline — the water glimmers like glass against a backdrop of rolling hills and rustic cottages. Stop for a traditional fika (coffee and pastry/kanelbulle) at a cozy local café before returning to the hotel to relax.
Later in the day, you’ll be personally welcomed by our local host team, who will introduce you to your family’s Swedish roots. Through stories, maps, and archival details, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of your ancestors’ lives — where they lived, what they worked with, and how their traditions are still part of Dalarna today.
End the evening with a delicious dinner of locally sourced dishes in the hotel restaurant, followed by a quiet sauna session or a moment by the open fire — a perfect introduction to Swedish calm and hospitality.

Overnight: Mora

Day 2 – Craftmanship, Culture & the Soul of Dalarna

After a hearty Swedish breakfast, you’ll take a short drive to Nusnäs, the birthplace of the world-famous Dala horse. Here, you’ll visit one of the original family-owned workshops — Grannas Anders or Nils Olsson — where artisans have been hand-carving and painting these colorful wooden horses for generations. You’ll see every step of the process and even have the chance to paint your own Dala horse, a keepsake that connects you to centuries of Swedish craftsmanship.
Drive back to Mora, and enjoy lunch at a lakeside café before visiting the Zorn Gammelgården – a house full of historic advenures. Nearby, is the home of he famous painter Anders Zorn, one of Sweden’s most celebrated artists. His artwork and beautifully preserved home provide a fascinating glimpse into life in Sweden at the turn of the century.
In the afternoon, go for a biking ride to Valaloppet’s tracks. You can bike for some km and then turn back to your hotel again – a nice tour in the forest.
As evening falls, enjoy dinner in Mora and have a relaxed evening with stunning sunset views over Lake Siljan.

Overnight: Mora

Day 3 – Life by the Lake: Nature, Simplicity & Local Traditions

This day invites you to connect with nature — the Swedish way. After breakfast, you check out and you’ll head to the nearby village Rättvik and the lakeshore to pick up kayaks or stand-up paddleboards for a peaceful morning on Lake Siljan. The calm waters and gentle rhythm of paddling create a sense of freedom and presence that is deeply rooted in Swedish outdoor life. For lunch, you hike to a fäbod, a traditional summer farm where locals once lived and worked during the warmer months. Here, you can meet friendly animals, taste fresh butter and cheese, and hear stories about rural traditions that have shaped life in Dalarna for centuries.
In the afternoon, go hiking in Styggforsen national reserv and have some waffles made over open fire.
Continue to Rättvik and check in your pittoresque hotel.  Explore small artisan shops, then enjoy a dinner of local specialties such as smoked fish or kroppkakor (potato dumplings with pork and lingonberries).
In the evening you have an optional visit not included to Visit Dalhalla, one of Europe’s most spectacular open-air concert venues, set in a former limestone quarry outside Rättvik. The turquoise waters and towering rock walls create an unforgettable natural amphitheater. If you would like to attend a concert under the stars, there are some great artists in the summer. The acoustics and atmosphere are unlike anywhere else on earth. Concerts in summer 2026: Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, A night in Hollywood and Takita.

In the afternoon, we recomment you to visit Falu Gruva, a world heritage worth visiting.
Return to your hotel to unwi.nd and watch the long northern twilight melt into night

Overnight: Rättvik

Day 4 – Music, Drama & the Spirit of Dalarna

Today you check out from your hotel in Rättvik and you have two options to choose between:
Option A – Dog sleedging
Continue the drive towards Sågmyra. Here you will go dog sleedging for 2,5 hours.
Enjoy a nice lunch on your way to Falun. Check in at your hotel and start walking to the Falu Mine and Museum for a guided visit. While in Falun, go visit Dalarnas Museum.
In the evening have a nice dinner and enjoy the nice town by the lake Runn.

Option B — Countryside Discovery:
If you prefer a quieter day, explore the Siljan Ring, a scenic drive through small villages, heritage farms, and local art studios. Stop for homemade lunch in a countryside café, visit charming wooden churches, and take a gentle nature walk along forest trails filled with wildflowers and birdsong.

End your day with a celebratory farewell dinner overlooking the lake — perhaps a toast with local cloudberry liqueur as you reflect on your family’s journey and the beauty of Sweden’s heartland.

Overnight: Falun

Day 5 – A Peaceful Goodbye

Your final morning in Dalarna begins with baked bread, local berries, and strong Swedish coffee.
Enjoy one last walk along the water or visit a nearby handicraft shop for authentic souvenirs — Dala horses, woven textiles, or hand-forged jewelry. An optional visit to the painter Carl Larsson’s home in Sundborn might be done in the morning.
Then, it’s time to drive back to Borlänge Airport. On your way back, you are going to do a final stop at Örnäs Stugan Museum. It is here the king Gustav Vasa escaped through the toilet. You can also have a final fika in the café.
Now it is time for you to return your rental car, and say farewell to Dalarna — though a part of it will travel home with you, in your stories, your keepsakes, and your connection to your Swedish roots.
